Top Five Cheesesteaks (Philadelphia, USA)

Although there are tons of great places to eat in Philadelphia that could satisfy any foodie, no food divides the people of this city more than the famous cheesesteak. Before I came to Philly, I liked cheesesteaks well enough; after I decided to study here, I became both passionate and knowledgeable about them. I now understand that the normal cheese for these subs is whiz, not provolone, and that the best cheesesteaks are minimal in the amount of extras they have.  They might not be the fanciest of foods, but they are able to satisfy any homey, greasy craving. I’ve tried dozens of cheesesteak places by now, and here’s my list of some of the best ones.

1. Tony Luke’s

love the food at Tony Luke’s. While the rest of the places I’ve listed below have great cheesesteaks, Tony Luke’s is my one of my absolute favorites. Although I will admit that my favorite thing at this restaurant is the signature roast pork with broccoli rabe, the cheesesteaks this family-owned business offer up are also fantastic. Right on Oregon Avenue in South Philly, this place is easy to get to, but also very busy. The ideal time to go to any cheesesteak place in Philly is during the off-peak hours because sometimes you can wait up to forty-five minutes for your meal. However, more often than not, it’s worth it if you’re craving one of these popular Philly foods. I plan on visiting Tony Luke’s for a long time to come, and I think it will be even easier since I recently found out a location will be opening up near Temple University. I couldn’t be more excited to have a Tony Luke’s up in North Philly, although I’m sure my waistline will soon be disagreeing with me.

2. Joe’s Steaks + Soda Shop

This restaurant is located in the Tacony/Wissinoming area and was formerly known as Chink’s Steaks. Tala wrote a great review on the restaurant, and it seemed to change her opinion about the Philly cheesesteak.

3. John’s Roast Pork

Another great place that serves both a great roast pork sandwich and cheesesteak. I do have to say that Tony Luke’s does beat this place out a bit in my opinion! Both are located in South Philly though, so you can always just check the two out…on the same day if you’re especially hungry.

4. Steve’s Prince of Steaks

Steve’s is a great place to get a cheesesteak if you’re not in South Philly. I always visit the one on 16th Street that isn’t too far away from Rittenhouse Square. The steak is tender and juicy. I would suggest getting the double meat cheesesteak in order to really treat yourself!

5. Jim’s Steaks

One other place to get a good cheesesteak in the city is right on South Street. Even though it has also been dubbed a tourist trap by some of the residents of Philadelphia, I think unlike Pat’s or Geno’s, Jim’s actually has a reason for being so popular. They are very quick about getting people in and out of here, but still serving up a quality cheesesteaks. One of the best things that Jim’s does is put the whiz on the bread, so it’s much easier to eat than some of the places that put the whiz right on top of the meat. The one suggestion I would make would be to ask for extra whiz because sometimes the subs can come out on the dry side. Here, I always get a steak with extra whiz and fried onions because a good cheesesteak really doesn’t need much else besides these three basics. I haven’t been to any of the Jim’s Steaks besides the South Philly location, but I’d imagine that the other restaurants also offer up great cheesesteaks and  I wouldn’t hesitate to try them out sometime in the future.

While my list seems a bit heavy on South Philly, it is the area with some of the best cheesesteak joints. I’ve been to all of the places besides Joe’s Steak + Soda Shop, and I have to say I really enjoy them all. My Mom hasn’t had a real Philly cheesesteak yet, so maybe next time she comes up to Philly I’ll take her to one of these places so she can have the true cheesesteak experience. If not, I’m sure I won’t have a hard time convincing a friend to eat at one of these places with me!

Food Truck Review from the Vendy Awards (Philadelphia, USA)

This summer I attended the 8th Annual Vendy Food Truck Awards in University City. The event had the best street food vendors in Philadelphia going head to head for the title of best Philly food truck while raising money for the Food Trust.

Little Dan’s Gourmet Truck

Our first stop was Little Dan’s Gourmet Truck. They were serving mini baguettes- one filled with parmesan breaded eggplant topped with spinach.

And another sandwich filled with a balsamic glazed chargrilled chicken in a baguette. Both sandwiches were great and very filling. The truck focuses on American and Italian food.

Little Baby’s Ice Cream

Next stop was Little Baby’s Ice Cream stand. I only tried the Earl Gray ice cream which I can’t say I loved. The taste was too strong for my liking. But given that there were other flavors I’m sure most are great.

King of Falafel

Next was the King of Falafel. A wonderful Middle Eastern food truck serving falafels, hummus, tabbouli and a long list of other Middle Eastern delicacies. The couple- both electrical engineers in Syria serve up some of the most authentic dishes on a platter.

I really enjoyed my plate of falafel which was served hot and fresh.

Vernalicious

Vernalicious was next on the list. On the menu were two varieties of toasted grilled cheese: one vegetarian filled with mozzerella, pesto and tomatoes, and another, a pulled pork grilled cheese.

Sugar Philly

Then there was Sugar Philly- a food truck dedicated to Macarons. Amazing right?

Foo Truck

Foo Truck was my favorite stand. Foo truck serves asian inspired hand held creations called ‘foowiches’. They were serving grilled wraps filled with green curry quinoa and another filled with teriyake meatballs. The Count and I thoroughly enjoyed both wraps. Even if we were drained wet from the torrential downpour. Of course we were quick to vote for this truck as being our favorite.

Yumtown

Yumtown was next.  A food truck dedicated to locally sourced ingredients.

I tried the Panzanella- a tuscan bread and tomato salad drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette.

Delicias

The Venezualan team behind Delicias specializes in… you guessed it: Venezualan food. What exactly is Venezualan food? The sample they served consisted of a corn flour patty split and filled with spicy chorizo, sweet plantains and caramelized onions. I loved this dish and was very close to choosing it as my favorite.

The Smoke Truck

The Smoke Truck serves traditional southern comfort food. They served up a pulled pork mac and cheese dish. It was really good and extremely filling.

Tacos Don Memo

If its tacos and burritos you crave then you will love Tacos Don Memo food truck. They serve mexican and tex-mex inspired burritos.

Unfortunately, by the time I finished my burrito the rain got heavier and I did not have a chance to take photos of some of the other contestants. One that is particularly worth mentioning was Little Pop Shop- a lovely little stand selling really amazing popsicles. I tried the goat cheese and fig popsicles which was very original and unlike anything else I have ever tried.

And there you have it folks a quick photo journey of some of the best food trucks in Philadelphia.

Koreana-University City (Philadelphia, USA)

Always in search of good Korean food, we found Koreana tucked away in a parking lot in University City. In fact you really have to know its there to find it since the door is on the parking lot side and there is no store entrance on the street side. That said thanks to my iPhone we were quick to find our way to the food.

This fast food Korean is a very casual spot where you order your meal at the counter, pay and find a table while you wait with your number. The food comes out pretty fast on a red cafeteria style tray. We ordered the Dol Sot Bibimbap and Soon Doo Boo with beef.

The Soon Doo Boo was a spicy stew with vegetables and beef served with a side of white rice and kimchi. Since it was my first time trying it I was told to drop the rice in the stew and mix the two or to take spoonfuls of each together. I opted for the first choice.

I have to say it was not my favorite not because it lacked in flavor but it just was not what I was in the mood to have. I preferred the Count’s Bibimbap dish which was served in a hot stone bowl with lots of veggies, tofu, beef and eggs to blend in.

Once the ingredients were mixed and cooked further in the hot stone bowl the result was delicious. So much so that the Count has been back 2 times since for his weekly fix of Bibimbap.

After our meals we noticed the table next to us having a colorful dessert treat and of course we then had to try it. It was a Korean version of shaved ice with syrup, canned fruits, bursting bubbles and condensed milk. The bursting bubbles were a first for me and I absolutely loved it. As soon as it made contact with my tongue it popped into a sugary syrup. I loved the texture and flavor.

Best part of our meal: the price. It was comparatively cheaper than other places we’ve been to in town, although this is the ultimate casual dining experience. You go here for the food not its location in the parking lot or scene. If you want good Korean fast food in a cafeteria style environment then you will for sure love this place!
